The seeds of the annual flowering plant, Nigella Sativa, are also known as black seed, fennel flower, nutmeg flower, roman coriander, black sesame, black cumin, black caraway, onion seed and black cumin seeds.
However, black cumin (Kala Jeera) is different from Nigella sativa (Kali Jeeri).
Used in India for cooking and medical treatment for thousands of years, and in cooking throughout the Middle East.
Mohammed called Nigella "a cure for everything except death".
Nigella seeds are referenced in the Bible and also in Greek and Egyptian history.
Claimed health benefits include improved immunity, lowering of blood pressure, reduced asthma attacks, improved insulin sensitivity for diabetics, lowered cholesterol and triglycerides, reduced inflammation and pain, and a chemical called thymoquinone (TQ) in the seeds has Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibitor, shown to improve patients with pancreatic, liver and aggressive prostate cancer.
May also improve free testosterone by binding to SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin), preventing testosterone from binding to SHBG which renders testosterone useless.
