Common UTI symptoms are urinary frequency, urgency and burning pain on urination.
D-Mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in some plants, especially cranberries. Although small amounts of D-Mannose are metabolized by the human body, most is excreted in the urine. In the bladder, D-Mannose can help prevent bacteria from sticking to the lining of the bladder and urinary passages. Bacteria adheres to these cells by using hair-like fimbriae that protrude from their surfaces, which attach to specific receptors on the cells lining the bladder and urethra. D-mannose interferes with the ability of the fimbriae to latch onto the cells, so are then flushed out with urine.
Although d-Mannose is a form of sugar, only tiny amounts are used by the body, so does not normally interfere with blood sugar regulation, although there are some rare reports of diabetics having more difficulty controlling blood glucose.

D-mannose may assist as a prebiotic, by helping the body stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system, very important in those who have had antibiotic treatments to help restore friendly gut bacteria.

Women are more prone to UTI infections than men, but in men symptoms are not as severe, and often mistaken for prostate problems. In fact UTI's in men can inflame the prostate, leading to chronic prostate problems.
Menopausal women have higher risk for UTI's due to estrogen loss, which leads to thinning of the tissue of the bladder and urethra, which is then more prone to bacterial infection.

Most UTI's are caused by the bacteria E. coli which is normally found in the digestive tract and on skin around the anus. In women, it is easier for the bacteria to travel the shorter distance to the urethra, and the urethra itself is shorter.

D-mannose is also used for the rare genetic condition carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome type 1b, where protein is lost through the intestines. Studies suggest D-mannose may slow down the protein loss and improve liver performance. May also reduce bleeding disorders and low blood glucose in people with this disease.

Other methods to reduce UTI's:
  • After a bowel motion, wipe from front to back to reduce bacteria moving toward the urethra
  • Women should urinate after sexual intercourse
  • Drink 8 glasses of water daily to keep urine dilute and to flush the urinary tract
  • Increase water consumption during an attack to reduce risk of infection moving up to the kidneys
  • Eat fresh vegetables and fruit each day to strengthen the immune system and the antioxidants will improve health of the urinary tract
  • Raw vegetable juice provides even greater benefits
  • Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, cereals)
  • Caffeine and alcohol irritate the bladder so should be avoided
  • Probiotics improve health of the urinary tract
  • Eat fermented foods regularly, like sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha
  • Selenium can help build a strong immune system

  • If D-Mannose and all of the above methods fail to work in a few days, antibiotics may be the only other alternative, but D-Mannose, probiotics and/or fermented foods should still be taken to aid recovery and to limit the damage done to healthy bacteria by antibiotics.
Other less well-known benefits of cranberries and d-Mannose include antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer properties.
