Berberine is a yellow-colored alkaloid compound naturally found in a variety of traditional plants and herbs such as goldenseal, barberry, goldthread, oregon grape, tree turmeric and phellodendron.
Antimicrobial, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory and blood glucose–lowering effects sown in studies.
Also benefits anti-ageing, gastrointestinal infections, heart disease, cholesterol, blood pressure, immunity, joints, bone density, weight control and more.
Studies show Berberine improves liver function and promotes anti-obesity effects.
Gut Bacteria
Significant beneficial effects found on digestive health and the “microbiome.”
Very encouraging experimental data has been found for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others.
AMPK (adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase) is an enzyme inside body cells, often called a "metabolic master switch" because of the importance in regulating metabolism. AMPK inhibition means that Berberine is normoglycemic (reduces blood sugar only if elevated), but reduction in blood glucose from Berberine may cause other diabetic medications to reduce blood glucose too much. Berberine inhibits CYP2D6, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4, which can cause many drug interactions. Berberine interacts with organic anion transporter proteins. Berberine may interact with microlide antibiotics such as azithromycin and clarithromycin at hERG channels on the heart, which can lead to serious cardiotoxicity. Always seek professional advice if taking any medication.
